DVSA MOT Integration

OwlGMS connects directly to the DVSA MOT History API to pull live test results, advisories, mileage readings, and expiry dates by registration number. When a vehicle arrives at your garage, you have its complete MOT history on screen before the customer finishes handing over the keys. Previous advisories, failure reasons, and mileage trends are all available instantly.

What the DVSA MOT History API Provides

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) maintains a public API that provides access to the MOT testing history of every vehicle registered in Great Britain. OwlGMS uses this API to retrieve data in real time whenever you enter or scan a registration number. The data returned includes the full history of MOT tests, not just the most recent one.

For each test, you see the date, result (pass or fail), mileage at the time of test, and any failure reasons or advisories. Advisories are particularly valuable because they highlight components that were not in a failing condition at the time of test but may deteriorate before the next MOT. These are items your technician should check as a matter of course when the vehicle comes in for any work.

Mileage history across multiple years gives you a clear picture of how the vehicle is being used. A sudden spike in annual mileage might indicate a change in the owner's circumstances that affects service intervals. A very low mileage might suggest the vehicle has been sitting idle, which brings its own maintenance considerations. This context helps your technicians make better recommendations.

DVSA Integration Capabilities

Everything the DVSA MOT History API feeds into your OwlGMS workflow.

Registration Lookup

Enter any UK registration number and retrieve the vehicle's full MOT history in seconds. Make, model, colour, fuel type, and engine size are populated automatically from the DVSA data, saving you from manual entry.

Advisory Flagging

Previous advisories are highlighted on the digital job card so your technician knows what to look for. If a brake disc was advisory last year, it is likely to need replacing now. OwlGMS surfaces this information proactively.

Mileage Tracking

See the vehicle's recorded mileage at every MOT test going back years. Spot anomalies, verify customer claims about annual mileage, and recommend service intervals based on actual usage rather than guesswork.

MOT Expiry Alerts

OwlGMS tracks MOT expiry dates for all vehicles in your customer database. Combine this with WhatsApp automation to send MOT due reminders at 4 weeks, 2 weeks, and 1 week before expiry.

Full Test History

View every MOT test the vehicle has undergone, including passes, failures, and retests. Each entry includes the testing station, date, and complete list of defects. This historical view helps you understand the vehicle's condition trajectory.

Seamless Job Card Integration

DVSA data feeds directly into the job card creation process. When you book a vehicle in, the MOT history, advisories, and mileage are already attached. No copying data between systems or looking up information on the DVSA website separately.

How DVSA Integration Helps Your Workshop

The most immediate benefit is time savings. Without the integration, looking up a vehicle's MOT history means navigating to the government website, entering the registration and V5C reference, and manually noting down the relevant information. With OwlGMS, the data is pulled automatically the moment you type the registration number. Over a busy week with 30 or 40 vehicles, those minutes add up to hours of saved administrative time.

The second benefit is better-informed technicians. When a brake disc was flagged as advisory on the last MOT, your technician should give it particular attention during the current visit. Without the integration, that advisory might be missed unless the customer mentions it -- and most customers do not remember their MOT advisories. OwlGMS surfaces these automatically on the job card, so nothing is overlooked.

The third benefit is customer communication. When you show a customer their MOT history and point out that a component was advisory last year and has now deteriorated further, it builds credibility. The data comes from the government's own records, which adds authority to your recommendations. This transparency is central to the customer approval workflow in OwlGMS.

MOT Scheduling and Rebooking

For garages that operate MOT testing stations, the DVSA integration supports proactive scheduling. OwlGMS maintains a database of MOT expiry dates for every vehicle you have serviced. When an MOT is approaching expiry, the system can trigger an automatic reminder via WhatsApp or SMS, prompting the customer to book their test.

This proactive approach fills your MOT lane without requiring outbound phone calls. Customers appreciate the reminder, and you secure repeat business with minimal effort. The reminder includes a link to confirm the booking, making the process frictionless for both parties.
